At the SchoolFinder Group, we work with over 200 colleges and universities in Canada and around the world. We help them recruit students at the undergraduate and graduate level, and have been doing this for over 25 years.

For most of those years, we have focused on digital marketing — helping our clients generate student leads and build their brand on our three sites: SchoolFinder.com, StudyinCanada.com, and ScholarshipsCanada.com. And now, with our recent acquisition of Recruit in Canada, we are also helping our clients recruit students through in-person events.

One of the reasons — perhaps the primary reason — for our success is that we are focused on results, and specifically the results that our clients see with applications and student registrations. Our mantra is that your success is our success.

So, I was very pleased to see the latest results from the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC) for the Fall 2023 intake. OUAC tracks undergraduate applications (and confirmations later in the spring) to 26 Ontario universities. Broadly speaking, applications are up 2.8% this April compared to April 2022, which is great news. But not every university has seen an increase.

Here are some stats:

  1. 9 of the top 10 schools are using our digital platform to generate leads and build their brands. (In terms of percentage increase, this ranges from a 7% to 30% increase.)
  1. And 6 of those top 10 schools ranked as top performers in our Fall Secret Shopper Program. 
  1. 15 of the 16 schools with an increase in applications from 2022 to 2023 are using the platform. And 10 of those 16 were top performers in our Fall 2023 Secret Shopper Program. 
  1. 6 of the 8 schools with a decline in applications from 2022 to 2023 are NOT using the platform.  

What Does this Mean?

Obviously, the secret to successful student recruitment is not to simply use our platform. Schools who are active on our platform likely have a digital marketing strategy that includes our platform and other channels, and there may be external factors at play. But what seems clear is that a student recruitment strategy that includes our platform combined with effectively responding to your student leads will help you increase your applications.
